History: Lewis was born in the little parsonage of Daresbury in Cheshire near the towns of Warrington and Runcorn, the eldest boy but already the third child of the four-and-a-half-year-old marriage. Eight more children were to follow. When Charles was 11, the whole family moved to London. Lewis’s father was an active and highly conservative cleric of the Church of England who involved himself, sometimes influentally, in the intense religious disputes that were dividing the Church. Lewis was to develop an ambiguous relationship with his father’s values and with the Church of England as a whole. His early academic career veered between high promise and irresistible distraction. He did not always work hard, but was exceptionally gifted and achievement came easily to him. He obtained first-class honours in Mathematics Moderations, and was shortly thereafter nominated to a Studentship by his father’s old friend, Canon Edward Pusey. He obtained first-class honours in the Final Honours School of Mathematics, graduating Bachelor of Arts. He remained at Christ Church studying and teaching, and his talent as a mathematician won him the Christ Church Mathematical Lectureship.
In 1856, a new dean, Henry Liddell, arrived at Christ Church, bringing with him his young family. Carroll became close friends with Liddell's wife, Lorina, and their children, particularly the three sisters: Lorina, Edith and Alice Liddell. His friendship with the Liddell family was an important part of his life in the late 1850s and he grew into the habit of taking the children (first the boy, Harry, and later the three girls) on rowing trips accompanied by an adult friend to nearby Nuneham Courtenay or Godstow.

On one such expedition Carroll saw the Queen of Hearts relaxing on the riverbank under a weeping willow and reading. He was enchanted by her but since he was with the children that day, he did not approach her. The next day he went to find her but she did not show. A week went by with the writer visiting the spot every day and on the final day (when he'd given up hope of seeing her again) he saw her in the same spot. The two spent the day together and Lewis found himself falling for the mysterious and intelligent woman. When he asked her if he'd see her again, she assured him that he would but not to go looking for her; she'd find him.

Time passed and the Queen of Hearts would visit Lewis whenever the urge arose. Sometimes they were apart for weeks, sometimes days, sometimes months. The Queen was well aware that she had the writer wrapped around her little finger and that he'd never stray to another woman.

One afternoon in July 1862, while on a rowing trip with the Liddell girls, Lewis invented the outline of the story that eventually became his first and largest commercial success. Having told the story and been begged by Alice Liddell to write it down, Lewis eventually (after much delay) presented her with a handwritten, illustrated manuscript entitled Alice's Adventures Under Ground in November 1864.

Throughout this writing process Moxxi visited him often and would ask him to read to her. Other times she would read aloud to him while he brushed her hair. Originally he had written his beloved into the manuscript, making her sultry, manipulative and charming; only after she got you under her spell would she delightfully announce the famous execution orders of "off with their head!".

Lewis's relationship with Moxxi continued and he was on the verge of proposing to her. However on the night that they were supposed to meet, she didn't show. Heartbroken, he waited and waited for her, days turning into weeks, weeks into months, until he came to the conclusion that she was not coming back. As heartbroken revenge, he changed Moxxi's character to who she is in the books today, and got the manuscript published.

Moxxi returned just as the overwhelming commercial success of the first Alice book began changing Lewis's life. The fame of his alter ego "Lewis Carroll" soon spread around the world. He was inundated with fan mail and with sometimes unwanted attention. Though he had been frosty and cold to her initially, she helped ward off this unwanted attention by appearing in public with him. She would never allow for her name to be taken and so was always known as "Carroll's mysterious companion".

He also began earning quite substantial sums of money but continued with his seemingly disliked post at Christ Church. Later a sequel – Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There – was published. Its somewhat darker mood possibly reflects the changes in Dodgson's life. His father had recently died, plunging him into a depression that lasted some years.

Their affair continued through the years with Moxxi leaving as usual to go off and have her own adventures when she got bored. She wanted to take Lewis with her and show him the wonders of the universe but held back for two reasons: one, she was afraid that he would write about it, and two, she was worried that he may leave her once he found out she wasn't human.

Due to Moxxi's manipulative ways, Lewis found it easier to get along with children rather than adults. Children he liked for their innocence and purity. Though he had a few affairs with a few women when Moxxi was away for really extended periods of time, he never managed to fall in love with anyone again and his family hushed the scandals up. He is hoping that Moxxi will return and stay for good this time, or at least take him on her adventures.
